hunger Jayne Anne Ammar

A gnawing ache

in the pit of my belly

Tells me I'm hungry

like a musical piece

a violent crashing wave

My belly turning in on itself

and I know

Amid echoes of times

when my hunger was the enemy

I'm suddenly grateful

for my sweet body

how it tells me, "EAT"

how I get to choose

to take care of it

Lovingly, like a baby

The crescendo calms

the wave abates

My feet carry me downstairs

to find something yummy to eat

So mundane

and so magical.
